Description
North Gate at Buckfast Abbey is a gateway located at the north end of the outer court, dating from the 12th century with extensive later alterations. It is constructed from local grey limestone rubble with some red sandstone and features a slate roof. The gateway spans over the road, with remains of vaulting visible on the eastern block, which is now part of the abbey tearoom.
The exterior includes a chamfered semi-circular arch that springs from a chamfered impost. To the right, the gable end of the tearoom wing has two 20th-century two-light casement windows. The right side of the tearoom features three ground-floor and three first-floor splayed two-light windows, with the first-floor windows having chamfered lintels and two first-floor Gothick timber casements. There is a 20th-century ground floor plank and cover strip front door.
Historically, a phased plan by S.W. Brown was published in 1988, and some rough sketches of the North Gate from the 1930s by A.W. Everett are preserved at the abbey.
