Description

The bank barn, covered gateway, and cartshed are located immediately east of Furzeleigh Farmhouse in Ashburton. The barn likely dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, while the cartshed may be from the 18th century, and the covered gateway was probably added in the 19th century. The structures are built of stone rubble, with the gateway having a slated roof and the rest covered in corrugated iron. The L-shaped bank barn occupies the northern end of the yard and likely includes shippons and a root-house below. The gateway is attached to the south of the barn, with the cartshed situated to the south of the gateway. The bank barn features round-arched doorways with well-cut voussoirs, including eight below, two above in the northern arm, and one in the eastern arm. There is a long flight of granite steps leading to the left doorway of the northern arm. The northern wall has two wide doorways with old plank doors, opposite narrower doors on the southern side. The gateway has a chamfered and stopped wood frame and a pitched roof. The lofted cartshed, which may have housed animals at the northern end, has been somewhat altered, with a cart entrance supported by an iron girder for the lintel and a plain wood-mullioned window in the western wall. Inside, the shippon under the eastern arm of the barn contains a wooden feeding trough and hayrack, while the root-house under the northwestern corner has a loading hatch with a sloping sill.
