Description

South Gate at Buckfast Abbey is a historic gateway located on Buckfast Road in Buckfastleigh. It dates back to the 12th century and has a long and complex history of structural and functional changes. At the time of the survey in 1992, it was in the process of being converted into an abbey retreat. The building is constructed from local stone rubble and features a slate roof.

The gateway has been raised over the years to adapt to changing ground levels and includes medieval jambs leading to a 19th-century arch. The adjoining block originated as a single-storey almshouse associated with the monastery and has undergone various alterations, serving both domestic and industrial purposes.

The exterior of the building has two storeys and an attic. The south side, which faces the road, features a segmental-headed gateway on the right, three ground-floor windows, three first-floor windows, and three second-floor windows, along with five shallow roof gables. There are signs of patching and blocked openings. The north side has one ground-floor window, one first-floor window, and six second-floor windows, with four shallow roof gables and similar evidence of its varied construction phases. The interior was not inspected during the survey.
