Description

Furzeleigh Mill Country House Hotel is a former mill and mill-house, now operating as a hotel. It dates from the late 16th century or 17th century and has undergone significant alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features solid rendered walls, with the right gable wall constructed of stone rubble, and has a half-hipped slated roof. There are rendered chimneys on the left gable wall and at the center of the ridge. The mill-house is to the left and appears to have a symmetrical two-room layout with a central through-passage. The mill building is located to the right, which is adjacent to a lower domestic range that likely consists of converted outbuildings. The mill and mill-house are three stories tall and four windows wide, while the adjoining range is two stories and six windows wide. The mill and mill-house have mid-20th century wood mullioned-and-transomed windows, and there is a lean-to projection across the front of the ground storey. It is said that the mill once had a mill-wheel and leat at the rear. The range to the right features late 20th century wood and metal-framed windows.

Inside, the ground floor of the former mill has been much altered but retains a heavy chamfered beam running lengthwise, with straight-cut stops, including two large stops part-way along, which are likely related to former machinery below. There is also a chamfered post further along. The first-floor ceiling beams show marks from former machinery, and the owner notes that more details may be hidden under the floorboards. An old listing description mentions roof trusses with pegged lapped collars, and there is said to be a large fireplace concealed in the ground floor right-hand room of the mill-house.
