Description

The chapel ruins, possibly a detached chantry chapel, date back to around 1300 and are located to the east of the Church of Holy Trinity in Buckfastleigh. The structure is in a ruinous state, built from local grey slatestone rubble with freestone dressings. It is a roofless building with thick walls, of which the east wall, part of the south wall, and a small section of the north wall remain.

On the exterior, the walls feature putlock holes and a wide, deeply splayed east window, which is dressed with alternating bands of chamfered red and cream stone and includes a glazing rebate. The remaining dressings suggest that this window was trefoil-headed. The south side shows the remnants of a similarly decorated probable lancet window to the east, with its sill mended using mullions, as well as a doorway with a cranked relieving arch, though its dressings are missing. The east jamb of another window can also be found on this side. The north side retains fragmentary remains of the east jamb of yet another window.

Inside, there are fragmentary remains of wall plaster, and close inspection reveals traces of red and yellow painted decoration on the splay of the east window, making this an unusual survival.
