Description

The churchyard wall, lych gate, and stiles located to the southwest of the Church of Holy Trinity in Buckfastleigh are significant features. The walls, likely dating back to the medieval period, enclose the churchyard on the south and southwest sides. The stiles are from the 19th century, while the lych gate has early 19th-century origins and was restored in 1971, as noted on a plaque. Constructed from local grey slatestone rubble, the lych gate features a slate roof and timber gates.

The walls are topped with a Devon hedgebank, and the south stile connects to a steep path leading up from the town, which begins with a long flight of steps. The lych gate faces the road access from the town, with a second stile located to its east. Each stile has large, irregular rounded standards with a single slab of slatestone between them. The lych gate has a distinctive design, featuring two widely spaced square-section piers at either end topped with pyramidal finials. A slate roof covers the structure, with a plastered underside.

In the center, a pair of gates is hung from moulded timber posts that extend to the roof of the lych gate. There is a pedestrian gate on the left and a section of fencing on the right. The gates and fencing are simply designed, with plain vertical slats and a slender central ledge, while the main standards have shaped finials. This structure is included for its group value with the Church of Holy Trinity, which is situated on a hilltop above the town.
