Description
The stable and carriage house, located immediately south of the lych gate of the Church of Holy Trinity in Buckfastleigh, was possibly designed for churchgoers and is now partly used as a tractor shed. It dates from the mid-19th century and does not appear on the 1839 tithe map. The building is constructed from local stone rubble and features a hipped slate roof. It has a rectangular plan and is situated close to the southwest entrance of the churchyard.
The exterior is a single-storey structure with two doors on the left, a window to the right, and a gated open bay at the far right. The stable doors have ovolo-moulded and bolection-moulded doorframes, along with stout plank doors that include large iron drop latches. There is a two-light shuttered window with a bolection-moulded frame and two-plank shutters that have bead-moulded planks. The carriage-house gate is made of timber and features a diagonal brace, splat verticals, and shaped finials.
Inside, the carriage house has a plastered ceiling. The remainder of the interior was not accessible during the survey but may still contain fittings of interest. The building has group value with the parish church, which is located on a steep hill some distance from the town and likely required stabling provisions during church services.
