Description
The war memorial located in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church in Buckfastleigh was erected around 1920. It features a hammered granite stone cross and shaft set upon a tapering square plinth. The inscriptions are in black painted lettering. The foot of the cross is slightly splayed and bears the inscription "OUR GLORIOUS DEAD," while the rest of the cross is plain. The front of the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF BUCKFASTLEIGH WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR 1914 - 1918 AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945 'BLESSED ARE THE DEAD THAT DIE IN THE LORD' REVELATION XIV.13." The sides of the plinth list the names of those who fell in World War I, and the rear lists the names of those who fell in World War II. Surrounding the cross are cast iron railings, which appear to be from a later date and are not included in the listing. The memorial was unveiled on 1st January 1921 to honor those who lost their lives in the First World War, with names from the Second World War added later.
