Description

The Almonry Gateway, also known as the Gatehouse, is a ruined structure located in Standish Village. It was likely built in the 14th century by the Abbot of Gloucester. The building is constructed from random coursed rubble stone, reaching up to the top of the ground floor. It features two large chamfered pointed archways, which are double on the outer side and supported by straight buttresses at the front. There are remains of the jambs of the inner arch, which once held a later pair of timber gates and posts. On the right side, there are remnants of two archways that separate the main throughway from a pedestrian side, with a small pointed archway positioned in the center. Additionally, there is a doorway raised above ground level on the left side, likely leading to the remains of a stairway, although it was not accessible at the time of the survey.
