Description
The rear gateway of No. 2 from South Street is a Grade II listed structure located on the south side of High Street. This gateway leads to a former inn yard and features a projecting two-storey design. On the north-east side, there is an outbuilding that may have been part of a tower on the medieval town wall circuit. The roof is made of Welsh slate, while the walls are constructed from Devonian limestone rubble, with the first floor partly weatherboarded and slate hung. The openings in the structure have timber lintels, and there are 18th and 19th century sash and casement windows, along with altered doorways. Above the gateway, there is a loft doorway. The gateway includes a fine double gate from the 16th or 17th century, which has been rehung in a later gatehouse. The doors are of an alternate plank and batten type, featuring iron pegs and moulded cover strips. Additionally, there are remains of an arched wicket gate in the left-hand door.
