Description

Eastgate House, located at 2 High Street, is a building that likely had its front remodeled around 1835, coinciding with the rebuilding of the Eastgate. It was originally the principal inn of Totnes, known as the King's Arms, and was renamed the King's Head in 1642. By 1762, it was referred to as the Angel Inn and featured four parlors, a large dining room that extended across the street, 15 lodging rooms, two kitchens, a coach house, and stabling for over 40 horses. In 1824, a ballroom was added at the rear. Lord Seymour purchased the building in 1850 and transformed it into a Mechanic's Institute and Reading Room, and it later served as the Berry Pomeroy estate office.

The building has three storeys and three windows, topped with a hipped Welsh slate roof. Its stucco front features a boxed-out wooden eaves cornice and a plinth. The windows are architraved sashes with glazing bars, while the staircase window has a round arch with radial glazing and margin lights. The main entrance is a round-arched, architraved doorway with a radial fanlight and a raised and fielded panel door. Inside, there is a geometrical staircase and a bracketed cornice in the hall dating from 1835. The former ballroom, built in 1824, has a hipped Welsh slate roof with projecting eaves and slate-hung walls. Its interior includes a moulded plaster cornice, a ceiling rose, and a chimneypiece with a good hob grate. Additionally, the east return to South Street features the battered base of the medieval town wall at ground level, constructed from coursed Devonian limestone rubble. The building is listed as Grade II* for its group value.
