Description
The North-West Gateway, formerly part of Whalley Abbey, dates from the early 14th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and consists of two storeys, although the upper storey is now roofless. The east and west walls feature outer buttresses with offsets and a pointed arch that is chamfered in two orders, supported by responds with capitals. The inner order has two quarter-round mouldings and a fillet. Inside, the passage between the archways is rib-vaulted and divided into eight bays. Between the fifth and sixth bays from the west, there is an intermediate wall with two entrances: a larger one with a segmental arch and a smaller one with a pointed arch. The north wall contains two doorways with pointed heads, one of which is blocked, while the south wall has a similar blocked doorway. The upper storey features three 3-light windows on both the north and south sides. The gateway is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
