Description

A row of four houses, likely originally a single dwelling, was probably built in the mid-17th century and altered in the late 19th century. The houses are constructed of sandstone rubble with a roof of slate and stone slate. They are two storeys in height, with an attic, and have a dripcourse. The windows are 19th-century, with chamfered reveals and a central mullion. The doors have chamfered stone surrounds. Nos. 3 and 4, at the left-hand side, are of five bays and have stone-gabled attic dormers above the third and fifth bays, each containing a single chamfered window. Doors are positioned in the third and fourth bays. No. 2 is of one bay and has a door to the left and two attic dormers. No. 1 has a window to the left of and one above the door, with a further attic dormer. Chimneys are located on the left-hand gable and between the houses. Inside No. 2, the door opens against a firehood baffle. A moulded and stopped heck post and bressumer is present, above which, a ceiling beam remains with two studs indicating the position of the original plastered infill. Nos. 3 and 4 were inaccessible at the time of survey but are said to contain a bressumer for a firehood that backed onto that in No. 2. They also feature an outshut which includes a dog-leg staircase with turned balusters and a moulded handrail. No. 2 and 3 have ceiling beams with quarter-round mouldings. The interior of No. 1 is said to contain no 17th-century features.
