Description
The building is a warehouse located at the head of Lane in Kendal, originally known as the Butcher's Arms inn. It was built in 1779 for Alderman William Petty as part of the Old Shambles, which included 40 shops and an inn. The structure features slobbered rubble on a plinth, with pilasters that support a pediment over the central bays. It has a hipped, graduated slate roof and is symmetrical in design. The warehouse stands three storeys tall and has five bays arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern.
The central bays contain a 20th-century door set in a semicircular-headed surround, complete with a projecting keystone and imposts. There are sash windows on either side of the door, each with 16 panes, and three sash windows on each upper floor, with the central ones in projecting surrounds. A blocked oculus is present in the pediment. To the left, there is a plank door with a sash window above it on each floor. To the far right, there is another door, with sash windows on the left side for each floor. All sash windows feature glazing bars.
