Description

The Old Carpet Mart is a warehouse located on Chapel Street in Knaresborough, dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone and red brick, featuring ashlar dressings and a pantile roof with stone slate lower courses. It is two stories tall.

The southwest entrance front has inserted glazed double doors to the left, with a large sliding door to the right and a single deep-set doorway under a timber lintel. Above these, there are three 2-light casement windows with glazing bars and ashlar lintels.

On the southeast front, there is a blind stone wall section to the left, while the right side features a brick wall with an off-centre narrow 2-light sliding Yorkshire sash window with glazing bars. On either side of this window are two broad 3-light Yorkshire sliding sashes, and above, there are four additional 3-light Yorkshire sliding sashes, all with flat heads and brick segmental arches.

The rear, or northeast gable front, has no openings, although the scars of several earlier windows are still visible. The northwest front includes a central recessed doorway, with a tripartite glazing bar sliding sash window to the right. To the left, there are double plank cellar doors above which is a 16-pane window in a former larger opening, along with a similar 16-pane sash window to the left. Above these, there are three 3-light Yorkshire sliding sashes. All openings have timber lintels, and various blocked openings also feature similar lintels.
