Description
The Central Primary School, located opposite number 23, dates to 1818. It was constructed as a National School for Boys and paid for by public subscription, with significant financial support from Matthew Pyper of Whitehaven. Later additions and alterations have been made to the building. It is built of coursed, squared rubble with quoins, and sits on a plinth. The roof is of graduated slate with projecting eaves, and there's a stone chimney at the south end. The school is a single, tall storey and comprised of twelve bays. A gabled porch fronts the south gable end; it contains a plank double door within an elliptical-headed surround with an impost band, and semicircular-headed windows in recessed surrounds on either side. The east and west elevations are characterised by tall windows, originally with glazing bars, now featuring 20th-century replacement glazing, and mostly segment-headed.
