Description
The gatepiers, forecourt walls, and attached enclosure walling to the east of Newby Hall date from the 17th century. The lintel to the door in the east return wall is dated 1685 and features the initials I. & E.N. (Nevinsn). The walls are constructed of coursed rubble, while the gatepiers are made of ashlar. The front walls are approximately 2.5 feet high and have wide, flat copings with a moulded edge. The gate piers are square in plan and stand about 10 feet tall, made from chamfered ashlar blocks topped with fluted caps and a cornice that supports a ball finial with a gadrooned upper hemisphere. The return walls are around 8 feet high, each containing a doorway that leads to the adjoining house. The east doorway features a chamfered surround with an ornately carved lintel, while the west doorway has a chamfered lintel. The west face of the west side wall includes two bee boles. The forecourt front walling, approximately 215 feet long and 6 feet high, is bonded to the east end and was formerly part of the enclosure walling for the garden and orchard of Newby Hall.
