1254/1/63 NEWBY 06-FEB-68 (South side) Gatepiers and Forecourt Walls to Front of Newby Hall

Gatepiers, forecourt walls and attached enclosure walling to east. Lintel to door in east return wall dated 1685 with initials I. & E.N. (Nevinsn). Coursed rubble walls, ashlar piers. Front walls c.2 1/2 ft high; wide, flat copings with moulded edge. Gate piers square in plan, c.10 ft high overall: Chamfered ashlar blocks with fluted cap; cornice surmounted by ball finial with gadrooned upper hemisphere. Return walls c.8 ft high. Each wall has doorway through, adjoining house; east doorway has chamfered surround with ornately carved lintel, west doorway has chamfered lintel. West face of west side wall with 2 bee boles. Bonded to east end of forecourt front walling, approx 215 ft long and 6ft high, formerly part of enclosure walling of the garden and orchard of Newby Hall.
