Description

Old Mill Flatt Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from 1666, featuring the initials T.E. and M.E. on the door lintel of its southern extension. The original building likely dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century. The house was extended to the north, adding a first floor, and to the south later in the 17th century, with further additions and alterations made afterward. The original structure is built of coursed squared rubble, while the northern extension uses stone blocks and the southern extension is made of snecked rubble, all with quoins. The roadside elevation is wet-dashed. The roof is covered with Welsh slate, featuring stone-flagged eaves on the farmyard side and graduated slate on the roadside side. The farmhouse has two storeys and an overall eight-bay farmyard elevation. The southern extension includes a studded plank door set in a chamfered surround with a false four-centred head above the dated lintel. There are two windows on the ground floor, with two additional windows and a fire window above, as well as on each floor of the central block. The northern extension has two windows under a continuous hoodmould. Most windows are casements in chamfered surrounds, originally multi-light, but all mullions have been removed. The first-floor fire windows are blocked. The south end features stone coping and there are corniced stone chimneys at the mid and end points. Inside, there is a stone spiral stair in the canted outshut at the rear of the southern extension. Each floor has a chamfered 17th-century wood door surround with a shaped head through the original north gable wall.
