Description

The Friends Burial Ground enclosure walls, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, feature drystone rubble construction and are approximately 4½ feet high. The enclosure includes re-set memorials on the south and west walls, with a stone stile built into the east wall. There are four memorial slabs, each around 4 feet high and 2½ feet wide.

On the south wall, from left to right, the first slab is inscribed in large, debased Roman capitals to Thomas and Mary Wilson, undated but recording deaths in 1684 and 1690, possibly carved during their lifetime as the gaps for their ages were not filled in. The second slab, with a segmental head, is inscribed in fine Roman capitals to Sarah, wife of Thomas Laverick, and is dated 1729. The third slab, originally the top of a chest tomb, is inscribed in fine Roman capitals to Elizabeth and John Morland, dated 1672 and 1682.

On the west wall, the memorial slab has a triangular head and is inscribed in flowing script to Robert and John Robinson, with the date appearing to read 1772, though it may be earlier. Thomas Lawson's memorial, which is set against the east wall, is listed separately.
