Description
The gates, gate piers, and flanking walls at the Lodge to Newby Hall date from the early 19th century. They are made of wrought iron, gritstone, and ashlar. The double gate features twisted dog bars and a scrolled upper half, standing at approximately 4 metres tall. It is flanked by piers made of rusticated masonry, which have modillion cornices and dragon crests. The flanking wall slopes down to two pairs of lower gate piers that share a similar design and are topped with lion crests. The right gate is intact and approximately 2 metres high, adorned with C and S scrolls, while the left gate is blocked. The ramped wall continues to the left, featuring two buttresses and another pair of gates with plain bars and a scrolled top, flanked by rusticated piers, with the right pier displaying an eagle crest. Attached to the left wall is a low curving 20th-century wall that incorporates two 18th-century-style piers with ball finials. Additionally, there is a free-standing section of wall to the right, about 1.5 metres north of the lodge, made of limestone and featuring three rusticated piers with ball finials.
