Description

High Aikton Farmhouse and adjoining barns are a historic farmhouse and barn complex. The barn doorway is dated S.I.B. 167, although the last numeral has weathered away. The farmhouse features roughcast walls and a graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and kneelers on the left, along with brick chimney stacks. The barns are constructed of red sandstone rubble and also have a greenslate roof. The farmhouse is two storeys tall and consists of four bays, with an L-shaped barn to the right. There is a 20th-century door and a sash window in a lean-to porch. The farmhouse has sash windows set in painted stone surrounds, with the upper floor windows containing 16 panes. The barn includes a plank door within an alternate-block surround under a dated lintel, as well as slit vents on two levels. An extension to the right features a wheel-head Saxon cross built into the side wall. For more details on the cross, refer to W.S. Calverley's "Early Sculptured Crosses in the Diocese of Carlisle," published in 1899, pages 86-87, which includes illustrations. The 19th-century front right-angled extension is noted as not being of interest.
