Description

Crookdake Hall is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, which incorporates features from the 14th century. The building has painted and pebble-dashed walls and is topped with a graduated greenslate roof that includes brick chimney stacks. It stands two storeys high and consists of four bays, with a two-storey stair wing at the rear that creates an overall L-shape.

A two-storey gabled stone porch from the 16th or 17th century features a plank door set in a Tudor-arched surround, which is topped by a continuous hoodmould that extends over a 19th-century side window and a similar window above the door. The building has sash windows in 19th-century painted stone surrounds. To the right of the porch, there is an extension with a 20th-century lean-to porch at the extreme right, while the left wall is notably thick. The left side wall has a massive stepped plinth.

At the rear, the extension includes 19th-century sash windows in painted stone surrounds, although the blocked end windows still have 16th or 17th-century hoodmoulds. Inside, the extremely thick 14th-century end wall contains a newel staircase that is blocked on the ground floor but still provides access to the attic. Behind a 20th-century fireplace in this wall, there is a ground-floor stone-arched fireplace from the 16th or 17th century. A ruined medieval wall, now separate from the house, indicates that this and the end wall were once part of a tower associated with the Crookdakes in the 14th century, the Musgraves in the late 15th century, and the Ballantines from 1663.
