Description

MATTERDALE DOWTHWAITE HEAD NY 32 SE 5/159 Aira Farmhouse and adjoining barns -

  • II House, former house and 2 barns. Probably late C17 with later additions. Stone rubble with slate roofs. South-east elevation of 2 storeys, 3-bay house with 3-bay former house to right, and small barns to each end. Farmhouse has sashed windows with single glazing bars and horns, those to ground floor with stone lintels, fire window and cross-axial stack to left. Former house has windows lacking frames, fire window to right with small light above; entrance to central bay. Barn to north-east has ventilation slots. rear has outshuts under catslide roofs to both houses. Barn to north-east has large entrance, that to south-west has projecting range to end, and entrance and pitching hole to left. Interior of former house has chamfered beams. Fireplace has cambered beam and spice cupboard recess, fireplace to opposite end has blocked 3- light chamfered-wooden-mullioned window rebated for glazing. Rear outshut has winding stair with timber cladding. 2 collar and tie beam trusses with chamfering.
