Description

This milestone, located in Hopesike Woods, is likely from the early 19th century and was part of the Carlisle to Longtown Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features cast iron plates. The squared stone has a rounded top and displays two plates on the front: one indicating that Carlisle is 7 miles away and the other stating that Longtown is 1½ miles away. The stone is whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. Additionally, there is a benchmark on the top of the stone.
