Description

The Globe Tavern is a public house located on Bank Street in Longtown. It likely dates from the early 19th century and underwent significant alterations on October 5, 1916, by Harry Redfern for the Central Control Board, as noted on an inscribed stone to the left of the entrance. The building is constructed of red sandstone rubble and features a graduated green slate roof with coped gables, along with ashlar and rubble chimney stacks. It has two storeys, with three bays on the left side under a gabled roof and a single storey with six bays on the right. The entrance consists of double 20th-century panelled doors with a glazed fanlight in a flush quoined surround. The windows are sash style with glazing bars in plain stone surrounds. To the left of the entrance, there is a wall with three blocked windows and what is likely the entrance to one of the original houses. Inside, the bar area features an inglenook with a minstrel gallery above, which is believed to be the only remaining part of the interior design attributed to Voysey, who was the designer for the Central Control Board's early pubs. The listing does not include the shop fronts on the High Street, which were formerly used as off-licence premises for the pub and are now under separate ownership.
