Description

This is a milestone from the early 19th century, originally placed for the Longtown to Edinburgh Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features a cast iron plate. The stone is squared with a rounded top and has a circular plate on the front that displays the raised letters "CARLISLE 9 MILES." The milestone has been whitewashed, with the letters highlighted in black.
