Description

This milestone, located on the east side of Carlisle Road in Longtown, dates from the early 19th century and was likely erected for the Carlisle-Longtown Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features cast iron plates. The squared stone has a rounded top and displays two plates on its curved front. One plate indicates that Carlisle is 8 miles away, while the plate below shows that Longtown is just half a mile distant. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black.
