Description

Milestone located south of Smalmston, dating from the early 19th century, marks the Longtown to Gretna road. It is made of red sandstone and features a cast iron plate. The stone is squared with a rounded top, and there is a circular cast plate on the front that reads "CARLISLE 9 MILES." The plate is whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black.
