Description

Eden View is a terrace of eight houses built in the early 19th century. The houses are constructed from red sandstone ashlar set on a squared plinth, featuring pilastered quoins on the end houses and a moulded cornice. Northlands and Sandheys are finished in painted stucco, while Solway Side and The Dunes have a cement render. The roofs are covered with graduated green slate and Welsh slate, and there are red sandstone ashlar and brick chimney stacks.

Each house is two storeys high with two bays, except for Sandheys and The Hollies, which have three bays. Eskdale and Dearham were originally one house with three bays. The entrances feature panelled doors with patterned fanlights, set within pilastered round-arched surrounds that have false keystones. Eskdale and Dearham have mid-19th century plain square-headed entrance surrounds. The Hollies includes engaged columns on its porch. The houses have sash windows with glazing bars, although some have been replaced with 20th-century windows in the original plain stone surrounds. Eden View has a 20th-century door and enlarged 20th-century windows.

These houses were built as part of a planned town intended to serve as the canal port for Carlisle. They hold group value with the Galegarth - Post Office group, and are included in the listing partly for this group value, despite some alterations.
