Description

These four houses, numbers 28 to 34, form a terrace built in the early 1850s as part of the Edentown estate in Carlisle. They are constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, distinguished by alternating light-colored headers, and sit upon a chamfered plinth with painted stone dressings. The roofs are covered in graduated slate and feature 19th-century and 20th-century brick chimney stacks. Each house has two bays and a double-depth plan. Each property has a panelled door with a radial fanlight, set within deep, round-arched brick reveals and a stone surround; all are right-hand doors except at number 30. Sash windows, many with glazing bars, are set in brick reveals with stone sills and flat brick arches. The interior includes panelled shutters on the ground floor. Conveyance documents from 1851, which detail the sale of 17 building plots at Edentown, are held at the Cumbria County Record Office. The Edentown estate was purchased as a green-field site by the Cumberland Co-operative Benefit Building Society in 1850. The appearance of these houses is similar to other houses built in Tait Street during the 1850s.
