Description

Heskett House, now a farmhouse but formerly a public house known as the Steam Packet Inn, was built in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of red sandstone with a plinth of split cobbles, featuring V-jointed quoins. It has a graduated greenslate roof and brick chimney stacks. The house is two storeys high and consists of three bays. A panelled door is set within a moulded pilastered surround, topped with a triglyph frieze and dentilled cornice. Single-pane sash windows are set in plain painted stone surrounds. A Roman altar is built into the wall above the entrance; details of its inscription can be found in Collingwood & Wright's Roman Inscribed Stones of Britain, 1965, page 629.
