Description
The sea lock and wharf, built between 1819 and 1823 for the Carlisle Canal, is constructed from red sandstone ashlar with V-joints and features large granite blocks at the seaward corner. It follows a standard lock design with recesses for two pairs of lock gates, which are now missing, and was designed to accommodate vessels of up to 100 tons, providing access from harbours to the canal basin. The wall of the lock extends to the east at a right angle to form a wharf. The structure remained in use until 1853, when the canal was drained and part of its bed was repurposed for the Port Carlisle Railway.
