Description
The stone barn at Brackenrigg is a fortified house converted into a barn, dating from the early to mid 16th century. The walls are a metre thick, constructed from coursed and squared red and calciferous sandstone sourced from the nearby Roman Wall, and feature a large projecting plinth course with flush quoins. The building has a graduated greenslate roof and consists of two storeys and two bays, with the right end bay being an 18th century cobble extension.
The original 16th century entrance has a roll-moulded architrave and jambs that include drawbar tunnels. There is an enlarged loft entrance above this. The barn retains original slit vents on both levels, while the rear wall also features original slit vents. On the ground floor, there is an 18th or 19th century window, and a small square window with a chamfered surround on the upper floor.
Inside, the upper floor includes a 16th century fireplace that has been opened to a relieving arch, creating an entrance to the extension. Flanking recesses may have served as a salt cupboard and a spice cupboard. The extension features a plank door set in a stone surround, with a casement window above it, also in a stone surround. A similar building can be found at Glasson.
