Description

The canal lock, built between 1819 and 1823 for the Carlisle Canal, is made of red sandstone ashlar with V-joints. It is a standard canal lock designed for vessels up to 100 tons, providing access from the Canal Basin to the canal. The lock was in use until 1853.
