Description
The Finedon War Memorial is located on Wellingborough Road, a main thoroughfare in Finedon. It stands approximately 5 meters tall and is constructed from Weldon stone. The memorial is a square monolith featuring an out-sailing cornice and an ogee capstone. Atop the capstone is a small equal-armed cross, adorned with roses carved in low relief at the center and on the terminals of the arms. Each corner of the cornice is accentuated by small pinnacles.
Each face of the memorial displays a single word: COURAGE, ENDURANCE, PROWESS, and CHEERFULNESS. Beneath each word are two square blind panels, and below these, a large slate plaque lists the names of those commemorated. On the front face, below the plaque, an inscription on a slate tablet reads: "TO KEEP IN MIND THE/ GREAT WAR & THOSE/ FROM THIS PLACE WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ 1914 – 1919/ AND/ 1939 – 1945." The slate plaques were added around 1990 to replace the original, weathered rolls of honour.
The base of the monolith is supported by scroll buttresses angled at each corner, and it is raised on two square steps, surrounded by a small paved area. The memorial is situated in a long, narrow memorial garden alongside the road, which is enclosed by iron railings.
