WELLINGBOROUGH BROAD GREEN (South side) War memorial and attached wall

The memorial, on Broad Green facing one of the main roads out of central Wellingborough, is an imposing monument which uses Derbyshire gritstone for the foundations, Corshill stone for the main body, and Weldon stone for the name panels. The central element is a pillar, c. 8 m overall in height, with flat, fluted, pilasters at the corners with Corinthian capitals. To the front, its central recessed panel has a moulded stone wreath with ribbons. The pillar is topped with an elaborate segmental pediment with a cartouche to the front with the initial W (for Wellingborough) set on a poppy head.

Running behind the pillar is an arcing stone wall with piers to each end with heavy ball finials. Inscribed on the wall is 1914 REMEMBRANCE 1918/ (names)/ 1939 - 1945/ (names)/ IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN SUBSEQUENT CONFLICTS/ KOREAN WAR 1950 - 1955/ (names)/ NORTHERN IRELAND/ ( name). Set in the wall are 13 plaques bearing the names of those who fell in the First World War, with three for the Second World War beneath. Those who fell in later conflicts are also commemorated. Behind the monument is a tall yew hedge; the memorial’s boundary is here defined by spiked railings, included within the listing. To the front are two, independently-listed, lamp standards.
