Description

Oldways is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house, with a datestone indicating it was built in 1711, although the rear part likely dates from the late 17th century. The building is constructed from squared coursed ironstone and features a 20th-century plain-tile roof, forming an L-shape with two storeys and an attic. The main front has a three-window range, with a central 19th-century door framed by a 20th-century wooden surround. The windows are casements with wooden mullions, transoms, and glazing bars, set beneath wooden lintels. There are three gabled roof dormers fitted with horizontal sliding sashes. The building is adorned with a moulded stone cornice, ashlar gable parapets, and kneelers, with brick stacks at either end. The left gable displays the datestone. The rear features additional casement windows. Inside, there is an 18th-century dogleg stair with a central newel and a short section of turned balustrade. The interior also includes some two-panelled doors, stop-chamfered spine beams, and remnants of open fireplaces in the room to the right of the entrance and in the kitchen, both of which contain salt cupboards with 18th-century panelled doors. Attached to the right of the main front is an 18th-century wall that encloses three sides of the front garden, made from squared coursed ironstone with ashlar coping. This building was originally used as the Dairy Farmhouse for Finedon Hall.
