Description
This is a row of eight houses located on Church Street, Finedon, built in 1847 for William Mackworth-Dolby. The facades are of squared coursed ironstone with ashlar dressings, while the rear is limestone. Originally designed as a terrace of two-unit houses, the row now presents an eight-window range with 3-light stone-mullion windows. The windows are fitted with cast-iron lozenge glazing bars. Each first-floor window is topped with a small gable, featuring ashlar parapets, finals, and kneelers. Doors are located at the rear of the properties, between windows 3 and 4, and 5 and 6, set within moulded stone surrounds with 4-centred heads and drip moulds. Decorative diamond-shaped stone-mullion windows above these doorways display the initials "MD" in the centre. The gable parapets and kneelers are of ashlar, and the stacks are rendered, situated at the ridge and ends, capped with octagonal pots. The date "AD 1847" is inscribed in the gables. The rear of the building has a variety of casement windows, with some 20th-century alterations. The interior has not been inspected. A 20th-century front door now replaces the original at number 11.
