Description

The Waddesdon War Memorial is located on a triangular green at The Square, where High Street meets Silk Street, in front of the properties numbered 91 and 93 High Street, which are also listed as Grade II. The memorial features a rough-hewn granite Celtic cross that stands approximately 3 meters tall. The north face of the cross has an interlace design carved in relief, while the south face is plain.

The cross is mounted on a tapered square plinth that has smooth, recessed panels displaying inscriptions. The lettering is made of black-painted inset lead. This plinth rests on a shallow, two-stepped square base. Surrounding the memorial is a chain supported by nine low stone pillars, and the area is gravelled. There are three steps leading down to the memorial from the footway.

The principal dedication on the north face of the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN/ PROUD AND GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN OF WADDESDON/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919./ AND IN 1939-1945./ 'FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH.'/ 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.'"

The names of sixty-two individuals who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the east and west faces of the plinth, with thirty-one names on each side. The names of fourteen individuals who fell in the Second World War are listed on the south face.
