Description

Nos. 101 and 101A on High Street are a pair of houses, originally serving as a Club and Reading Room, built in 1883. They are likely designed by W. Taylor of Bierton for Ferdinand de Rothschild. The buildings feature red brick, pebbledash, and ornamental half-timbering in the gables, with moulded bargeboards and tiled roofs. The panelled brick chimneys are adorned with terracotta rosettes and zig-zag ornamentation on the caps.

The houses have a picturesque T-plan and consist of one storey and an attic. The front facing the road has two bays, each with three-light transomed wooden casements, flanking a slight gabled projection. This central feature includes a rectangular wooden bay window on the ground floor, which has arched lower lights, barred top lights, and a central arched panel decorated with wrought iron scroll ornament. Above the bay window, a turned wooden balustrade features a central panel displaying the Rothschild badge of five crossed arrows.

On the left end, there is a small verandah supported by three wooden arches on turned balusters, with the central arch also featuring wrought iron scroll ornament. The balustrade here is designed with splats. The rear wall of the verandah is rendered and incised with Jacobethan cartouches that depict literary, artistic, and geographical subjects. An ornamental gable above the verandah overhangs on shaped brackets. There is a lean-to porch in the rear angle, supported by turned balusters and featuring an elaborate wrought iron bracket, along with another gabled porch attached to the rear wing.
