Description

Princes Gate Lodge is a gate lodge dating to approximately 1880-99, built for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild and possibly designed by W. Taylor of Bierton. It formed part of the entrance approach to Waddesdon Manor from the village, which was substantially rebuilt in the late 19th century.

The lodge is constructed of red brick faced in tiny rubblestones with ashlar quoins at ground floor, with tile hanging and timber framing to the gables, and a pitched tile roof with ridge tiles. Brick chimneys are corbelled and have terra cotta plaques. The design is in the Arts and Crafts style, adopting an L-shape.

The east elevation, facing Silk Street, features an advanced gable with two-storey bay windows containing six-lights with overlights and stone cross mullions; the brickwork between floors is of tiny rubblestones. A stone plaque displaying the Rothschild badge is set into the gable, which also has decorative barge boards. An entrance porch is set at an angle, with a small tile-hung gable above a brick wall. A recessed range to the side culminates in a bay window with a hipped roof on the south elevation. The rear, also facing south, has a single-storey range with a porch incorporating splat baluster railing on a dwarf brick wall, and a small gable with applied framing within the pitched roof. A one-storey rear entrance porch incorporates timber framing to the gables. The north elevation has a wide chimney breast with stone quoins, and a tall corbelled chimney stack above a pediment. An oriel window sits to the right, with a stone apron and applied timber under a gable featuring applied timber and decorative barge boards.

The interior includes a chamfered wood fireplace in the front room.

The lodge, adjacent to Princes Gate, forms a key element of the estate associated with the Grade I listed Waddesdon Manor. It shares group value with the adjacent Princes Gate and Nos. 1 and 2 Silk Street, as well as other listed buildings in the village including Nos. 93 and 94 High Street and the Five Arrows Hotel.
