Description

The Lucker War Memorial is located at a road junction opposite The Old Vicarage and its Grade II-listed garden walls, gatepiers, and gates. This tall memorial, over 5 meters high and made of Doddington Sandstone, features an equal-armed cross that rises from a square gabled pillar. The pillar has a blind arch on each side and stands on a three-stage base, which is set on a step.

The upper stage of the base is decorated with carved foliage cusps and displays the main dedicatory inscription, with a phrase carved into each of its four faces. The inscriptions read: on the north face, "THIS CROSS THE/ SIGN OF OUR FAITH/ WAS RAISED"; on the west face, "IN GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE/ OF THESE MEN"; on the south face, "WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN DEFENCE OF/ RIGHTEOUSNESS"; and on the east face, "AND FREEDOM/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919."

The names of those commemorated from the First World War are incised into the faces of the middle stage, with the dates 1939 – 1945 noted at the foot of the east face. The names of three individuals from the Second World War are incised on the lowest stage of the base. The First World War names are placed on the face closest to where each person lived.

Originally situated on a grassy triangle, the memorial now stands on a circular pavement and is surrounded by a spiked chain that hangs from low posts.
