Description

The Church of St Hilda is a parish church located in Adderstone with Lucker, built in the late 18th century and largely rebuilt in 1874. It is constructed of snecked stone, with the north wall and part of the vestry made from ashlar, and features a Lakeland slate roof. The church is designed in the Romanesque style and includes a nave, chancel, south porch, and vestry.

The south porch has a round-arched doorway that is fitted with arched wood and iron gates. The nave, which has three bays, features paired and single round-headed windows set in chamfered surrounds. It also has a concave cornice and two gargoyles with beasts' heads. The large two-light west window is topped with a roundel, and there is a bellcote over the east gable of the nave that contains two round-headed openings with a roundel above.

The chancel is a single bay with an apse and has similar windows to the nave. It features a corbel table adorned with vigorously carved beasts and a roll-moulded cornice.

Inside, the west window and chancel windows are shafted, featuring cushion capitals and roll-moulded arches. The tall round chancel arch is supported by two orders of columns and has a multi-moulded arch with nailhead decoration in the soffit. The church has an open timber roof with arched braces. Notable interior features include an elaborate Jacobean-style pulpit from 1904 by C. Errington, as well as good choir stalls and a reredos dating from around 1900.
