Description
2, Bridge Street is a house, originally two dwellings and later an inn, dating to the 17th century, with alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone, with an ashlar facade and stone slate roofs.
The building originally comprised one and two unit plans, and is two storeys high, with a partial attic. The front has a three-window range. A late 18th-century, two-storey square bay window is on the left, featuring glazing bars and tile hanging. A similar bay with a 19th-century casement window is on the first floor to the right. A central 19th-century casement window to the first floor sits under a wooden lintel with a keyblock. A ground-floor projection to the right has a lean-to roof and two large casement windows with glazing bars. A similar, part-canted bay window abuts to the left. The main entrance is a six-panel door to the left of centre, also under a stone lintel with a keyblock. A hipped roof dormer with a leaded casement is to the right. Ashlar gable parapets and a similar ashlar parapet to the right of centre indicate a change in eaves level and the division between the two former dwellings. An ashlar stack is located at the ridge. A blank plaque is positioned above the door.
An early 19th-century parallel range extends to the rear, and features sash windows with ashlar surrounds. A range set at right angles to the rear has a mansard roof; the upper room of this section was used as a recusant chapel.
The interior retains remains of open fireplaces and ceiling beams, including stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
