Description

The Cross Keys Public House is a public house located on West Street in Kings Cliffe. It dates from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries and is constructed of squared coursed limestone and limestone ashlar, topped with a Collyweston slate roof. The building features a three-unit plan with a rear wing and stands two storeys tall with a five-window range.

On the far left, there is a 19th-century, five-light, two-storey stone mullion bay window that displays a plaque with cross keys between the floors. The first floor has casement windows with glazing bars, while the ground floor on the right has two tall 20th-century casements beneath wood lintels. The centre of the building features two canted bay windows with ashlar bases and casement windows. To the left, an arched doorway has triple stepped keyblocks and capitals, leading to a 20th-century door. A moulded wood cornice runs along the top, and the right gable has an ashlar parapet with stone stacks at the ridge and end.

The left side of the building is made of squared coursed limestone, while the right side is ashlar, likely added in the 18th century. The rear wing matches the main structure. Notably, the left corner shows the springing of a former carriage arch. Inside, there is an open fireplace with a bressumer in the centre room and exposed ceiling beams.
