Description
The perimeter wall and gateway to Chichele College date back to around 1422, with modifications made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is built from regularly coursed and squared limestone. The gateway, which is from the 15th century, features a two-centred head and a moulded stone surround with decorated spandrels, located in the western section of the wall. The attached foundations were originally part of the college buildings. Chichele College was founded by Archbishop Henry Chichele and the wall forms the perimeter of the college, connecting with the south and east ranges, as well as the north range and the grounds of the foundations. Chichele College is recognized as an ancient monument and is under the guardianship of the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England.
