Description

College House is a house located on College Street in Higham Ferrers, with a datestone indicating it was built in 1633, with later additions from 1683 and modifications from the late 17th century to early 18th century. The building is constructed of squared coursed limestone and features a plain tile roof from the early 20th century. It has a three-unit plan that incorporates different building phases and stands two storeys tall with an attic, showcasing a six-window range.

A gabled porch, which projects forward to the right of the center, features an arch-headed outer doorway with a jewel-cut keystone and a ribbed door beneath a stone lintel. The porch's return walls are adorned with roundels that have cusps. To the first floor of the porch, there is a three-light stone mullion window, along with a small arch-headed attic window. To the right of the porch, a 17th-century canted stone bay window with a gabled attic hood contains a five-light stone mullion window on the first floor, while the ground floor window has been altered to only one light in the right return. There is also a two-light stone mullion attic window.

To the left, the four-window range dates from the late 17th to early 18th century and features renewed leaded cross windows set under gauged stone heads. The building has a chamfered plinth and a moulded cornice, with ashlar gable parapets and kneelers topped with square finial bases on the 17th-century range. The 18th-century range includes two gabled roof dormers with casements. Brick and stone stacks are located at the ridge and ends of the roof. The datestone above the doorway reads 1633, while the rear elevation displays a tripartite sash window and another datestone from 1683. Inside, there are some panelled doors and window reveals.
