Description
Peartree Cottage is a house, dating from 1709, and restored in the early 20th century. It is built of squared limestone with a plain tile roof. The house has a three-unit plan and two storeys, with a three-window front. It features 20th-century casement windows in original openings, each with a wooden lintel. A four-panel door with a plaster surround and flat top is located to the left of the centre, and a matching door is on the right. Ashlar gable parapets and brick and stone stacks are visible on the ridge and at either end. A datestone is positioned to the right of the centre. The left gable has two single-light first-floor windows also under wooden lintels. An 18th-century range was originally attached to the rear, although it was reconstructed in the early 20th century. The interior, which was not inspected, is said to have an open fireplace with a bressumer (a large beam above a fireplace) and ceiling beams. An ancient pear tree is trained against the left gable, and the house takes its name from this tree.
