Description
The barn and projecting side wings to the north of Pitstone Green Farmhouse is a Grade II listed building. It features a barn with a cowshed and stable wings that surround three sides of the farmyard. The barn consists of five bays from the 18th century, which were extended by three bays to the east around 1830. It is constructed with a timber frame and weatherboard, topped with a tiled roof. There are projecting gabled waggon entries at bays 3 and 7, along with lean-to extensions at the front of the remaining bays; the central lean-to is open and has perches for poultry. The 18th-century bays include trusses with diagonal braces to the tie beams and raking queen posts. The cowshed and stable wings, dating from around 1830, are made of pale chequer brick and also have tiled roofs. The left wing is a single storey with three loose boxes featuring stable doors and slatted windows, along with a cowshed that has two doors, two similar windows, and a manger inside at the northern end. The taller right wing contains stables with a hayloft above and a granary at the northern end, which is over an open shelter for cattle. This wing has three stable doors, two slatted and partly glazed windows, and two small board doors on the left. There is a cart shed at the rear, while a 20th-century open shelter at the front of the barn is not of special interest. This building is part of the Pitstone Green Farm Museum.
