Description

No. 40 Windmill Street is a house dated 1734, as indicated by the weathervane. It is constructed of brown and vitreous brick, featuring red brick quoins and window surrounds. The building has a rendered plinth, a moulded brick band course, and eaves. The roof is hipped and covered with old tiles, and there is a brick chimney on the left side. The house is double-pile, with two storeys and three and a half bays. It has three-pane sash windows with box frames and segmental brick heads, along with narrower two-pane sashes between the left bays. The entrance features a flush-panelled door that is top-lit and set in a wooden architrave frame, positioned to the right of centre, and is topped by a flat wooden cornice hood supported by carved scroll brackets. A fine wrought iron weathervane sits at the centre of the roof. There are attached brick walls that enclose a small front garden, which are ramped down to the front and include square brick gate piers. To the right, there is a former stable range that has been converted into dwellings but is too altered to be included in the listing.
